Three Positive Steps Forward in Waste

April 10, 2022 davidcrossan@googlemail.com Comments Off

Environmental health is a major news storey right now. Due to the environmental damage that plastics are causing, we are all more
concerned than ever about how we recycle our rubbish ” even more so if we want to hire a skip for the day. And, while we’re on the
subject, if you’re comparing skip hire services, we’re glad to report that CKB Skip Hire is very conscientious about how we process your
waste. Before we get to that, we wanted to share with you some of the most inspiring ways being developed by others!

Innovative Strategies to Boost Recycling Efforts

It’s no secret that one of the most effective strategies to reduce waste going to landfill is through prevention, but recycling is far and away
the second-best choice. It is becoming a lot more viable than it was a few years ago. Certain nations, such as Spain and Portugal, are
even retrofitting recycling bins with Radio Frequency Identification to monitor the amount of rubbish deposited in them. The system works
as follows: the rubbish collector scans and weighs your bins and charges you for any waste that is not recycled. While this may sound
harsh, there is no doubt that it is working”the RFID bins have resulted in a 7″10% increase in recycling thus far.

Others, such as Dr Jenna Jambeck, take a somewhat different strategy ” rather than prodding people into altering their habits, she aims
to persuade them to do so on their own, by assisting them in experiencing “a moment of joy” while recycling. What she has devised is
simple yet effective. Essentially, it’s a recycling bin that illuminates with a cheerful face when something is recycled, providing a sense of
accomplishment as rubbish is progressively gathered.

Alternatives to High-Tech Waste Disposal

We’ve already discussed how e-waste is a massive global concern. Several scientists are already addressing the issue, namely, using
dissolvable circuit boards. These are typically about 1 mm thick and constructed of silicon, which is soluble in water. The concept is simple
but brilliant: simply make them thinner. They can perform the same function when reduced to 100 nanometres (roughly the width of one of
your hairs), but they also disappear after three to six months. Rest assured that prominent scientists are developing the concept.

Then there’s the Axion Recycling facility in Salford (not far from CKB Skip Hire), which maintains a state-of-the-art facility for sorting and
recycling plastic polymers. It employs infrared technology to identify individual polymers, which takes around a hundredth of a second,
and then nudges them off a conveyor belt to land in the right container through an air jet. Approximately two hours to sort a tonne of
plastic ready to be melted down into something new using this approach.

We don’t claim to be nearly as high-tech as that here at CKB Skip Hire ” we employ plain old-fashioned humans to sort our waste, and
we’ve discovered that everything works out rather well! We’ve made it our mission to eventually divert 100% of garbage from landfills, and
our very own recycling facilities are assisting us in that effort! Additionally, when you opt to lease a skip from us, you are assisting. Simply
input your postcode and contact details on our webpage to receive a quick skip hiring quote, and we’ll take care of the rest.
